129 Krazy Ekklesia Nombres

Great post at Out of Ur with 129 church names that don’t make sense.  Here are my favorites.

Number 13:  Journey (“Don’t Stop Believing” is our theme song)

Number 33:  Out Post (the parsonage is known as the “Out House”)

Number 50: Awakening (We do early services like nobody else)

Number 90: NorthPointe (Adding an “e” tells everyone we are sophisticated.  We drink Lattes)

Number 129: SoulSearch (We really thought StarSearch would be around a lot longer)

Surprised By Grace

I’ve been reading Tullian Tchividjian’s new book, Surprised By Grace about the book of Jonah.  Not only is it an excellent exposition of Jonah, but it also has a great little survey throughout the book about how artists have depicted the Jonah story in sculptures and paintings.  There is even a section with pictures of the artwork he describes.  I highly recommend this book.  It is very accessible and faithful to show Christ in the book of Jonah.

The Pastor and Community

This is an interesting read from Mark Dever

Here is an excerpt:
“True or False? While conservative Christians are often said to be more concerned about “saving souls,” religious liberals give a significantly larger proportion of their income to alleviating poverty and meeting the needs of the downtrodden and underprivileged. False. Conservative evangelicals tend to give more to the poor than religious liberals. (See Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion Sept. 1998; also Robert Wuthnow’s Acts of Compassion [1993].) Many individual conversions have resulted in personal reformations and particular social improvements. And we hope will result in good effects in this world.”

What is Jesus Worth to You? (Apparently $1.59)

Amazon is offering the 64 page booklet The Radical Question: What Is Jesus Worth to You?
for the Kindle by David Platt for $1.59.

A Book with a 35 word title?

This is what Andy Naselli says he would (jokingly) title his book:

Let Go and Let God? Examining a Popular View of Christian Living: or, Why a Quick Fix to Your Struggle with Sin Will Not Result in a Victorious Life, Higher Life, Deeper Life, More Abundant Life, or Anything Other Than a Misguided, Frustrated, Disillusioned, and/or Destroyed Life.
